A man who authorities believe shot a man to death Saturday afternoon in northwest Indiana, later fatally shot himself in downstate Illinois, according to Hammond police.

Police responded about 2 p.m. to the 100 block of Hudson Street between Sheffield and Hohman avenues in Hammond where they found a 34-year-old man on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda.

Jaime Rodriguez, of Hammond, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Hoyda said.

A suspect described as a heavy-set Hispanic man wearing dark colored clothing was seen running away from the scene who investigators later identified as 35-year-old Salvador Corral, Hoyda said.

Police determined that Corral was also seen driving a gold Chevrolet Impala with Indiana license plates. Illinois State Police stopped a vehicle matching that description about 7:30 p.m. in Bloomington, Hoyda said.

When troopers approached the car, they found Corral had fatally shot himself inside the vehicle, Hoyda said.

Investigators believe Corral and Rodriguez were involved in a family argument before the Hammond shooting, Hoyda said. No other suspects are being sought in the homicide.
