A south suburban man was killed Thursday afternoon when his vehicle drove off a bridge on the Indiana Toll Road in Hammond.
Dwayne Jefferies, 56, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox eastbound on I-90 about 2:45 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway, went off the bridge over Calumet Avenue in Hammond and landed upside down on the road below, according to the Lake County coroner’s office and Indiana State Police.
Police said the vehicle fell about 30 feet and landed on its roof.
Jefferies, who lived in the 12500 block of South Trumbull Avenue in Alsip, was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, where he later died, the coroner’s office said. He suffered blunt force trauma in the crash.
He was the only person in the Equinox, said Indiana State Police Corporal Chase Overbeeke. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the crash was under investigation Thursday afternoon, but Overbeeke said Jefferies may have suffered from a medical issue that caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
Calumet Avenue was closed for about 3 hours for investigation after the crash.
