A Florida semi truck driver was Tasered and taken into custody after leading police on a nearly hour-long chase Monday morning through northwest Indiana.
At 10:44 a.m., a Whiting police lieutenant tried to stop the semi for not being on a truck route at Front Street and 119th Street, according to Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda.
The chase went through Whiting, Hammond, East Chicago, I-80/94, Lansing and Calumet City, Hoyda said.
During the chase, two Hammond Police squad cars were struck, parked cars in Whiting were hit and two crashes happened in Calumet City.
Several stop-sticks were deployed during the chase to try to stop the semi, and eventually the semi hit the stop sticks at 165th Street and Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond.
Towards the end of the chase, three Hammond police officers fired their weapons at the semi’s tires to try to stop the driver, Hoyda said.
The semi driver, a 44-year-old Jacksonville, Florida man was taken into custody at 11:38 a.m. in the in the 3300 block of Orchard Drive in Hammond, Hoyda said.
Just before he was taken into custody, the officers stunned him with a Taser, Hoyda said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and charges are pending against him Monday afternoon.
