A 38-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Hammond, Indiana.

Officers responded at 5:08 a.m. to the crash in the 7200 block of Indianapolis Boulevard, according to a statement from Hammond police.

Investigators found that Sylvester Pigram III was driving a silver Kia Optima south on Indianapolis at a high rate of speed when the car veered off the roadway and barreled into a light pole, police said. The Optima then continued rolling on the sidewalk, crashing into parking barricades and a traffic light.

Less than an hour later, Pigram was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

An autopsy Saturday ruled that Pigram died from blunt force trauma related to the crash, the coroner’s office said. He lived in Hammond.

No one else was riding with Pigram and no other injuries were reported, police said.

It was unknown whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said. Toxicology results for Pigram were pending Sunday morning.
