A teenage boy accused of stealing a vehicle was shot by police during a pursuit Wednesday morning in Hammond, Indiana, authorities said.

About 8:45 a.m., Hammond police officers were pursuing a vehicle that had been reported stolen when they fired shots that wounded the 15-year-old at the conclusion of the pursuit in the 7600 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to the Hammond Police Department and Indiana State Police.

The boy was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to state police. His condition and where he was shot has not been released.

State police were called to investigate the officers’ use of force, Hammond Police Lt. Steven Kellogg said.

In statement issued Wednesday evening, state police officials identified the officers involved in the shooting as two African American officers and a Hispanic officer, while also noting that the information was not considered “pertinent to the on-going investigation.”

The boy was also identified as African American, state police said.
